West Nottingham Presbyterian Church
Strengthened by our past; Blessed by our present; Encouraged by our future

West Nottingham Presbyterian Church Playschool is sponsored by the church but our preschool program is open to all children and incorporates a broad early childhood curriculum.  We offer a three day program for three- year-olds, and the option of a three-day or a five-day program for four- year-old children.

Our program runs from September through May and includes field trips, special visitor days and music programs.  Field trips have included visits to pumpkin patches and animal farms, the Rising Sun Library and Post Office, and the Plumpton Park Zoo.  Special visitors have included the Rising Sun Fire Department, Santa Claus and nature specialists.  The children perform a Christmas program for family and friends in December, and an end of the year program in May.  Also in the spring, the Playschool is invited to sing during a regular Sunday church service.

The Playschool day begins at 9:00 and ends at 11:30.  In between are two- and-a-half fun filled hours of art, music, reading, play and so much more!  A typical day features a mix of child-directed free play and teacher-led activities include art, music and movement, finger plays and reading.  There is also time for outdoor play in a large, fenced play area, or in our basement play area during inclement weather.  A daily snack is also included.

We introduce a variety of themes throughout the year, often related to the season.  The daily art project, reading selections and other activities involve around the theme.  Often the snack will be theme related as well.  For example, a theme on friends may include a snack of friendship salad, with all children contributing ingredients.

Basic skills are introduced and reinforced in a low key, fun manner.  Children learn to recognize their name through attendance routines, the helper chart, placemats, etc.  Finger plays, songs and games help the children learn the alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes and other basic skills.  Children learn valuable social skills through free play and group activities.  Puzzles, blocks and art activities help develop fine motor skills, while outdoor play helps develop physical coordination.

Parents are an important part of the Playschool program.  We welcome your input and encourage your questions.  Parents are invited on field trips as space allows.  On birthdays (or "special days" for summer birthdays) parents may provide a special birthday snack.

Safety is a major component of our program.  There are at least two staff members in each room, and all staff are certified in first aid and CPR.  We hold at least one fire drill each month, and have routine safety inspections.  The fire escape route, as well as Playschool's discipline policy, are clearly posted in each room.

At West Nottingham Presbyterian Church Playschool we are dedicated to providing an enriching and fun preschool experience for your child.
